Defend Colorado Now Endorses Amendments 38 and 40

Will ensure fairness

October 17, 2006

October 17, 2006 (Lakewood, CO): Defend Colorado Now (DCN) endorses Amendment 38 - "The Petition Rights Amendment", and Amendment 40 - "Term Limits for Judges". "Amendment 38 would remove roadblocks and hurdles that have been deliberately put in place over the years to make it extraordinarily difficult for the People of Colorado to exercise their right to the petition process," said Fred Elbel, DCN co-chair. "As one example, it would specifically disallow the five-month delay taken by the Colorado Supreme Court this year when ruling on the Defend Colorado Now initiative. Amendment 38 would streamline the petition process."

Waldo Benavidez, DCN co-chair, stated "Amendment 40 would impose term limits on judges who seem intent on overstepping their bounds and making clearly inappropriate and arbitrary political rulings as they did this year with the Defend Colorado Now immigration reform initiative."

Former Gov. Richard Lamm, DCN co-chair, while dissenting on the DCN decision to endorse these amendments, had stated on June 27, 2006 that "Black robes can not conceal political activism in the Court."

DCN is a registered issue committee in support of Referendum H - "Limiting a State Business Income Tax Deduction", and Referendum K - "Immigration Lawsuit Against Federal Government". "Both are absolutely necessary in order to help confront the illegal immigration crisis in Colorado and in the United States," said Elbel. See www.DefendColoradoNow.org for further discussion of these endorsements.
